Clinical research

Clinical research studies drugs, biological materials and medical devices in humans, evaluating possible beneficial effects as well as their safety and efficacy.

This kind of research is based on clinical trials, the results of which in their turn provide a great deal of support for evidence-based medicine.

In the last twenty years, the contribution of private capital, mostly originating from the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, has contributed significantly to an increase in the funding available for clinical research. At the same time, however, there has also been growing suspicion concerning the close relationship that has developed between some physicians who participate in clinical trials and the sponsoring companies.

There is a wide recognition that it is time for regulatory authorities, research institutes and scientific societies to become more sensitive to the pitfalls of such connections.
